Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis are highly significant causes of community and hospital acquired infections. Currently, the two major themes in our research laboratory include the function and relevance of biofilm accumulation molecules in Staphylococcus epidermidis including polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA) and accumulation-associated protein (Aap). Secondly, we are investigating amino acid metabolism and the importance of the use of amino acids as carbon sources in an in vivo environment. Additionally, we work in close collaboration with investigators at the Center for Staphylococcal Research in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology and Division of Infectious Disease investigating multiple aspects of biofilm formation, bacterial metabolism, pathogenesis and the host response. Lastly, Dr. Fey serves as Medical Director of the Nebraska Medical Center Clinical Microbiology Laboratory. This work has afforded our laboratory great insight into relevant questions related to infectious disease and bacterial pathogenesis including mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.
