Brian Boerner

Brian Boerner, MD

Dr. Brian Boerner is an endocrinologist at UNMC. He is actively involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education.  He also serves as Program Director for the Endocrinology fellowship and co-director of the Clinical Educator EMET program for medical students at UNMC.

Kimberly Michael, MA RT(R), RDMS, RVT, FSDMS
Associate Director

Kim Michael is the Anderson Distinguished Professor and Director of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.  She has been involved in sonography education at UNMC for over 25 years. She is active in the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography serving on the Board of Directors. Current research interests include mindfulness in the classroom and the use of IPE in health professions curriculum.

Beth Culross

Beth Culross, PhD, RN, GCNS-BC
Associate Director

Dr. Culross is a nurse educator and Director of the Learning Resources Center for the College of Nursing.  She has been teaching at UNMC since 2008.  Her interests include simulation, skills training, and active learning strategies.  She has taught actively in the undergraduate program both in the clinical and classroom setting, primarily in geriatrics and rehabilitation.

Elizabeth Beam, PhD, RN
Education Researcher

Dr. Beam is a nurse educator who has worked with the HEROES grant at the UNMC College of Nursing since 2005. Her interests include health care education, infection control behaviors, and simulation.

Michelle Howell Smith

Michelle Howell Smith, PhD
Education Researcher

Dr. Howell Smith is an educational research methodologist who specializes in mixed methods research.  She is currently the program chair for the mixed methods special interest group of the American Education Research Association and has taught mixed methods research since 2012.  She joined UNMC in 2020 to support health professions education research across campus. Dr. Howell Smith is available to consult on research design, data collection and analysis, publication, funding opportunities and more.
