Campus invited to College of Nursing’s May 6 celebration

picture disc. The UNMC/NHS campus is invited to an ice cream social Tuesday, May 6, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in celebration of Nurses Day and the 10th anniversary of the UNMC College of Nursing Cosmopolitan Mobile Nursing Center and the Family Health Care Center.

The 36-foot mobile nursing center and ice cream truck will be on the sidewalk along 42nd Street, in front of the College of Nursing and College of Pharmacy.

The Cosmopolitan Mobile Nursing Center travels throughout rural and urban Nebraska and western Iowa, providing disease prevention, screening, case finding, health education and referral services. Although the MNC offers a broad range of services, its primary mission is prevention and screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The Family Health Care Center is a primary care practice in South Omaha. The center provides accessible health care services to individuals and families in South Omaha. More than 70 percent of its patients are uninsured and living in poverty. The Family Health Care Center staff is committed to providing comprehensive, coordinated, and continuous health care services to its patients.

Nursing centers have become an important provider of safety net health care over the past 20 years, yet they receive little support from the federal government. As a result, few survive, organizers say. It is, therefore, particularly significant, they say, that the Mobile Nursing Center and the Family Health Care Center have survived and thrived since their development in 1993. Organizers credit the success to factors including the visionary support of the College of Nursing and UNMC, the dedicated faculty clinicians, and the students who have, through the years, provided care at these nursing centers.
