Smoking shelter removed near UMA building; three others available

A smoking shelter has been removed from the north side of the University Medical Associates building (Unit V) because of construction, but three other shelters are available for smokers who work in that area of the campus.

The smoking shelters available include a shelter near the intersection of 45th Street and Dewey Avenue, just south of the Munroe-Meyer Institute; another shelter between Swanson Hall and the patient parking structure (Lot 2); and a third shelter south of the Eppley Science Hall, near the third-floor walkway between Wittson Hall and the hospital.

“Employees and visitors, if they are going to smoke, need to make sure that they use the designated smoking shelters, for everyone’s safety,” said Rick Boldt, coordinator of Special Projects for UNMC. “Definitely, it is against policy to smoke within 15 feet of any entryway.”

Boldt said that the removed smoking shelter will be replaced when construction is complete for the Clinical Center of Excellence, which will join the two towers of The Nebraska Medical Center. Boldt noted that in the Emergency and Safety section of the Campus Directory (green binders), there is a map of designated smoking areas.
