Thirteen of America’s top doctors work at UNMC

picture disc.Thirteen physicians at UNMC, and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have been named among “America’s Top Doctors,” according to the latest edition of a national guide published annually by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. of New York City. A total of 15 Nebraska doctors made the list.

The doctors practice in specialties ranging from oncology and orthopedic surgery to child psychiatry and fetal medicine.

“We congratulate these clinicians who have been recognized for their extraordinary work,” said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. “It is a testament to the outstanding care our faculty-physicians provide to patients in our clinics and at The Nebraska Medical Center.”

The following UNMC physicians, and their specialties, were named in the “America’s Top Doctors” guide:

  • James Armitage, M.D., medical oncology, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine;
  • Steven M. Denenberg, M.D., otolaryngology (head and neck surgery);
  • James Edney, M.D., surgery;
  • Thomas C. Howard, M.D., vascular surgery;
  • Donald Leopold, M.D., otolaryngology;
  • James Neff, M.D., orthopedic surgery;
  • Stephen Rennard, M.D., pulmonary disease;
  • Byers Shaw, Jr., M.D., surgery;
  • Michael Sorrell, M.D., gastroenterology;
  • Alan Thorson, M.D., colon and rectal surgery;
  • Paul Tomich, M.D., maternal and fetal medicine;
  • Jon Vanderhoof, M.D., pediatric gastroenterology; and
  • Dennis Weisenburger, M.D., pathology.

The doctors in the Castle Connolly guide are selected through a peer nomination process. Of more than 650,000 physicians in the United States, only about 4,000 physicians ultimately were included in the guide.

The guide is designed to identify those doctors noted for excellence in diagnosing or treating a specific problem or disease. Although patient care excellence is the foremost characteristic being recognized in the guide, many of the physicians listed in the guide are also outstanding researchers.
