Communication skills courses offered

UNMC Human Resources is presenting two communications skills courses for employees: Command Spanish for Administrative and Office Staff and English as a Second Language.

Command Spanish for Administrative and Office Staff

The Nov. 10 to Dec. 15 course will meet on Mondays from 5:15 to 8 p.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2017. The course is open to UNMC, UMA and The Nebraska Medical Center employees. UMA and The Nebraska Medical Center employees must call 402/559-5916 for payment details. The class is limited to 25 participants.

The six-session non-credit course is presented through Metropolitan Community College’s Workforce Development Institute. Command Spanish provides immediate application of practical Spanish that is occupation specific, using language materials and workshops that require no prior knowledge of Spanish. Included in the program are a participant manual and audio-tapes. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: learn and use language components as greetings, etiquette, appointments and instructions, and identify and use key phrases specific to healthcare settings.

English as a Second Language

The Nov. 10 to Dec. 22 course will meet on Mondays from 5:15 to 8 p.m. in the College of Nursing, Room 2020. The course is open to UNMC employees, but class size is limited to 20 participants.

The seven-session non-credit course provides individuals with limited English proficiency the opportunity to learn to distinguish sounds aurally and to produce those sounds orally. The participant improves his/her listening abilities to better understand speech of native speakers by studying common speech reductions. The participant improves his/her own speech by learning the components of the English sound system as well as the stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns of English speech. A textbook will be provided to all participants.
