Bicycling Club forms at UNMC; inaugural expo May 6

Are you someone who would like to bike on Omaha’s trails, but aren’t sure what to do if you get a flat tire? Are you unsure where you can go to purchase a bike that’s right for you? Do you not know anyone with whom you can ride alongside?

Well, the newly formed UNMC Bicycling Club is providing an opportunity to get answers to these questions and many others. The club is hosting its Inaugural Cycling Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium.

“The cycling exposition is an opportunity for employees to learn all kinds of information regarding bicycling from professionals on the subjects,” said Kim Lamb, Ph.D., a primary organizer of the UNMC Bicycling Club. “We’ll also have more information at the exposition about the club, and we want riders of all levels to feel as if they can participate. The more riders we have, the more enjoyment everyone will have.”

The UNMC Bicycling Club was formed over the winter and currently has more than a dozen members. All employees of UNMC, University Medical Associates and The Nebraska Medical Center are welcome to join the group.

At the exposition, staff members from Bike Masters and UNMC’s Center for Healthy Living will be on hand to answer questions, as will cyclists from Team Kaos, the UNMC/The Nebraska Medical Center racing team.

Information also will be available about a Life-a-Thon ride in support of organ donation on May 22 and how to participate with UNMC in the Corporate Cycling Challenge. Other information available at the exposition will include:

  • Fitting the helmets for you and your children;
  • Keeping hydrated while riding;
  • Routine maintenance;
  • How to fix a flat tire; and,
  • Clothing and equipment – fit and comfort.
