
The following are some of the milestones achieved at UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center in the 10 years since the two entities merged.

2007
- Plans for The Nebraska Medical Center’s Clinical Cancer Center in west Omaha are announced.
 - Ground breaks on the Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation.
 - The Nebraska Medical Center receives Medicare certification for heart transplantation.
 - Ground breaks on Bellevue Medical Center.
 
2006
- UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center have a $1.5 billion economic impact on Nebraska, supporting 17,100 jobs.
 - UNMC opens new facility for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
 - UNMC breaks ground on second research tower and opens the College of Public Health.
 
2005
- The Hixson-Lied Center opens.
 - UNMC Eppley Cancer Center initiates statewide lung cancer screenings.
 - The Nebraska Medical Center’s heart transplant program is revived and the hospital becomes the first in Nebraska to perform more than 12 transplants in one year.
 
2004
- Liver transplant No. 2,000 is performed at The Nebraska Medical Center.
 - Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson donate $5 million to the NU Foundation to create a comprehensive outpatient center focused exclusively on women’s health.
 - Virginia-Nebraska Alliance created with UNMC, Virginia Commonwealth University, five Historically Black Colleges and Universities and community colleges.
 - The Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital opens.
 
2003
- UNMC’s Durham Research Center opens.
 - UNMC, Creighton University Medical Center, The Nebraska Medical Center and State of Nebraska partner to create the Nebraska Regional Poison Center.
 - The Nebraska Health System becomes The Nebraska Medical Center.
 
2002
- The Nebraska Epilepsy Program opens at UNMC/The Nebraska Medical Center.
 - U.S. Department of Defense awards UNMC $1 million to conduct research targeted toward lessening the harmful effects of chemical warfare agents.
 - Nine adult transplants and one pediatric transplant in a 36-hour period at The Nebraska Medical Center.
 
2001
- Glenn Fosdick becomes president and CEO of The Nebraska Medical Center.
 - Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., named first UNMC vice chancellor of research and John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., named dean of the College of Medicine.
 
2000
- UNMC Eppley Cancer Center earns Clinical Cancer Center designation.
 - UNMC College of Nursing launches online bachelor of science in nursing and master’s degree programs.
 - The hospital becomes the first in Nebraska to offer intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to treat cancer.
 
1999
- The Lied Transplant Center opens.
 - Tree of Life campaign launched in 20 cities to raise awareness for organ donation.
 - Connector hallway between University and Clarkson Towers opens.
 
1998
- Harold M. Maurer, M.D., is named the seventh UNMC chancellor.
 - Outpatient Care Center named Durham Outpatient Center in honor of Chuck and Margre Durham.
 - Nebraska’s first set of quintuplets delivered at The Nebraska Medical Center.
