Notes on slips and slides

This winter, people have been injured on campus due to slips and falls. Some falls have resulted in broken bones.

Spring is just around the corner, but with all the snow still around, we still need to make sure we do all we can to prevent slips and falls.

Here are some tips from the Employee Safety Committee:

  • Test the surface when you step outdoors or out of your vehicle.
  • Wear shoes or boots that provide good traction. If you want to wear heels or other kinds of shoes, simply carry an extra pair with you to change in to.
  • Take small careful steps. When getting out of a vehicle, step, don’t jump. When possible, use handrails, handles — anything that will help you keep your balance. Never run.
  • Look out for slippery spots. Especially after warm days when the snow melts and refreezes after sun sets. It may be safer in some areas to walk on the snow covered areas to avoid walking on the slippery spots.
  • Report slippery areas to the Facilities Help Desk at 559-4050 as soon as possible.
  • If someone is injured on campus use the blue light phones or call Security at 559-5555. Make sure you contact security even if you call 911 from your cell phone.

You can purchase shoe traction devices that strap over your shoes at sporting good stores. The University Hospital Auxiliary gift shop stocks “Yaktraxs.” UNMC employees receive a 10 percent discount.
