The following is a list of recent achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students:

Judi Schlife, an instructor in the UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division, and Linda Witte, a recent graduate of the college, were part of a group of 80 people nominated as the “Best Nurses in Nebraska” by readers of the Lincoln Journal Star.

Maurice Godfrey, Ph.D., an associate professor of pediatrics at UNMC, will receive the Chief Standing Bear Organizational Award today at the state capitol in Lincoln. The award is being given in recognition for work done by his team, which includes Liliana Bronner and Kim Soper, to create awareness among American Indian students of native role models in the health and science fields through the Science Education Partnership Award community poster project.

Ayman El-Mohandes, M.B.B.Ch., M.D., M.P.H., dean of UNMC’s College of Public Health and Terry Huang, Ph.D., chairman of Health Promotion, Social and Behavioral Health in the College of Public Health, recently represented UNMC in a U.S. delegation visit to Haiti. The group’s focus is on postgraduate medical education. Dr. El-Mohandes co-chairs the HHS sponsored consortium on rebuilding medical education in Haiti. The formation of the group was spearheaded by Rubens Pamies, M.D., UNMC vice chancellor for academic affairs.

The Scottsbluff-Gering Rotary Club recently established a new annual student scholarship in the College of Nursing for students in the accelerated bachelor’s degree in nursing program. Regional West Hospital Foundation also announced a new scholarship for students in the same program.

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Don Leuenberger and College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., were among those who turned out for a recent retirement tea for Del Lee, the former senior associate dean for administration and director of finance for the College of Medicine who retired this week after working at UNMC for 38 years.
