Computer emergency notification system test set for July 16

Use of the emergency notification system

This emergency notification system is one of many notification methods that will be used for weather alerts and other emergencies that affect our campus.

There will be a test of the Computer Crawler Emergency Notification system Friday at approximately 10 a.m.. The test message will appear on networked computers that have been activated on the system, which includes most of the computers supported by both UNMC and hospital IT.

Those with PCs on the UNMC campus supported by UNMC IT should perform a quick check to see if you have the Emergency Notification Crawler software (Note: solutions are still being explored for those using Macs).

Look for an icon in the task bar (usually located on the lower right hand-side of the monitor. The icon is a red box containing white letters that spell “UNMC.”

If you do not see the red box shut down and reboot your computer. See an example of what the icon looks like.

Using Internet Explorer, UNMC customers may self install the software if the red box still does not appear after rebooting by clicking here.

Then tell it to “RUN.” Wait a minute or two and the software will install and the icon should be there. If you have any problems, contact the UNMC ITS Helpdesk at 559-7700 for assistance.

Those with computers supported by the hospital or others should contact their IT support for assistance.

Upon activation of the Emergency Notification system a bell will sound on those computers with speakers and volume on. The test message will then scroll across the screen. Emergency messages will scroll for 10 minutes. The user can cancel the scroll at any time during activation.
