Back to School 2010 — Norfolk students excited to start school

A special alliance

Read UNMC Today on Thursday to hear from UNMC’s Bill Lydiatt, M.D., who is teaching students in the UNMC High School Alliance.

The start of classes on Monday ushered in the inaugural group of students at the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk.

The division, which along with the Northeast Community College’s nursing programs, is in the J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh College of Nursing

Below we hear from two members of the inaugural UNMC northern division class and one student who plans to be a part of future classes.

Riley Ohde
Riley Ohde of Atkinson is one of 32 students enrolled in the UNMC’s Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) program in Norfolk. The new division adds a great deal of convenience to her pursuit of a nursing degree.

“I am very excited to attend a great nursing school in a small town. If the new UNMC division had not been built in Norfolk, I would have had to travel much farther away for my BSN or stop my education after my associate’s degree.”

Jennifer Lemmons
Jennifer Lemmons of Randolph also is enrolled in the UNMC BSN program at the northern division. Her past experiences with nurses have inspired her to pursue a nursing career and she is happy that UNMC offers her a chance to follow her dream close to her home.

“I am beyond excited to attend a BSN program here in Norfolk. It is something I have wanted for years but the distance to travel made it an impossible dream.”

Chad KinKennon
Chad KinKennon, formerly of Papillion and now of Norfolk, plans to finish his associate’s degree at Northeast Community College before he pursues bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing science at the northern division.

Growing up in the Omaha area made him aware of the medical center’s reputation as an educational institution.

“I am excited to have the UNMC College of Nursing Northern division here in Norfolk. As a college and high school graduate from the Omaha metro area, I have always dreamed of becoming a part of UNMC’s highly-distinguished tradition by graduating from one of their professional programs.”
