New wellness program now available at UNMC

Geared to individuals 50 and older and those who are Medicare eligible

A new wellness program for individuals over age 50 or eligible for Medicare is now available at the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Called EngAge Wellness, the program employs a whole-person wellness approach to optimal aging through the six dimensions of wellness – social, physical, intellectual, spiritual, emotional and vocational.

The Home Instead Center for Successful Aging is located at 38th Avenue and Leavenworth Street.

“This is a unique program,” said Jeannie Hannan, wellness manager for the program. “It is tailored to the specific needs of seniors. We think it will provide an exciting new option in helping individuals age more gracefully.”

The program is open to the public. Those who join before May 31 will be eligible for the special three-month introductory rate of $40 per month for individuals or $60 per month for couples.   This provides individuals a chance to experience all programs and services currently offered through EngAge Wellness.

Some of the features of the EngAge Wellness program include:
·         Individualized fitness and wellness programming;
·         State-of-the-art exercise equipment that is safe and easy to use;
·         Whole-person wellness education programs for lifelong learning;
·         Wellness coaching and personal training; and
·         Wellness research and educational opportunities.

A variety of group movement classes will be offered including low impact aerobics, yoga and tai chi. Educational offerings will include courses in journaling, stress management, healthy eating and navigating community resources.

Hannan said the exercise equipment is powered by air pneumatics, which allow for constant resistance during the entire range of motion. Large digital displays will automatically count repetitions.

Other unique equipment features include:
·         Treadmills that start at .1 mile per hour and go up to 10 miles per hour;
·         Stationery bikes that offer a smooth stepping motion without the impact; and
·         360 degree swivel seats making it easy to get on and off equipment.
