UNMC lab assistant receives research fellowship from Society for Vascular Surgery® Foundation

Will be studying abdominal aortic aneurysms in UNMC surgery laboratory

CHICAGO – John Mitchell, a laboratory assistant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, is one of eight students to receive a $3,000 stipend from The Society for Vascular Surgery® Foundation for a research fellowship. The stipends were awarded at the Vascular Annual Meeting® held in Chicago last month.

 

During his one-year fellowship, Mitchell will be studying abdominal aortic aneurysms in the laboratory of Timothy Baxter, M.D., professor in the department of surgery at UNMC.

 

An Omaha native, Mitchell is a 2007 graduate of Creighton Prep High School and expects to complete his undergraduate degree in exercise science at the University of Kansas later this year. The fellowship is designed to provide students with research experience to help them determine possible career options.

 

In addition to Mitchell, the other award recipients were:

 

·              Sara Bartlett, Washington University, St. Louis;                                                 

·              Julia Glaser, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston;

·              Calvin Harberg, University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine;

·              Matthew Huber, University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla.;

·              Daniel Lee, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, N.Y.;

·              Doran Mix, University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, N.Y.; and

·              Viraj Raygor, University of California San Francisco.

 

The awards are made to United States or Canadian institutions where students are conducting two to 12-month research projects. All awardees are sponsored by a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery.

 

Upon completion of their research, awardees must submit a written report to the Society for Vascular Surgery Research and Education Committee.
