Sept. 6 Omaha Science Café: Impact One’s work, impact in the community

Impact One will be the topic of the next Science Cafe in Omaha on Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. The speakers will be Shelly Schwedhelm, director of emergency, trauma, and preparedness services for The Nebraska Medical Center, and Jannette Taylor, executive director of Impact One.

Impact One is a community-based organization that helps Omaha residents with gang intervention and prevention, as well as job training. The $100,000 project, administered by the Omaha Community Foundation, was established in 2010 by Omaha State Senators Brad Ashford and Brenda Council, along with civic leader Jane Rogers.

Schwedhelm and Taylor will talk about the work and impact of the organization in the community and in schools.

The organization focuses on community development programs that include gang prevention and intervention, prison re-entry, employability and resource referrals. Partners include the Violence Reduction Fund, the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health, The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC’s hospital partner and Creighton University Medical Center.

Science Café, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. The event is hosted by UNMC, Bio Nebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures.

A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC’s strategic plan. The goal of Science Café is to get young adults interested in science by presenting it in a casual setting. Free pizza, provided by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, will be available for the first 50 attendees.
