A first of its kind national conference on disaster preparedness in long term care facilities will be held May 21-22 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
During a disaster, residents in long term and residential care facilities are at higher risk for injuries and therefore require special assistance. The conference, titled, “Long Term/Residential Care Disaster Preparedness: Protecting Our Most Vulnerable,” will offer new information and insight, as well as better prepare professionals for disasters.
“Long term care facilities have a vulnerable population, and also may be expected to provide health care to others after a disaster. Preparation and planning are critical,” said Philip Smith, M.D., professor of infectious diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and author of “Infection Control in Long Term Care Facilities.”
The conference will feature speakers from around the country who have experienced disaster situations in long term/residential care facilities as well as experts in Medicare and Medicaid requirements.
The two-day training includes continuing education credits for physicians, nurses, and assisted living administers. Several networking opportunities will be available throughout the conference, which will provide a chance for participants to share their own stories and lessons learned. Cost of the conference is $195 for both days.
