In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Week, The Nebraska Medical Center Diabetes Center will feature a series of free events for patients, the public and the UNMC community today through Thursday.

Events include:

Tuesday:

  • A nutrition and food demonstration with Sarah Keegan, registered dietitian, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Durham Outpatient Center’s west atrium.
  • And “Ask the Expert” question-and-answer session, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association, featuring UNMC Physicians’ specialists, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Sorrell Center, Room 3002.

Wednesday:

  • Activity and Zumba lesson with Tena and Lena from ZFit 72 Studios, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Durham Outpatient Center’s west atrium.

Thursday:

  • Fine tuning diabetes management with tried-and-true and tech-savvy tools, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Durham Outpatient Center’s west atrium.

The Diabetes Center is a “one stop shop” for patients. It includes clinical care, education and research designed to prevent, treat, cure and promote the well-being of those with or at risk for diabetes.

“It helps everyone feel better about themselves and each other,” said Cindy Mathiasen, who coordinates and leads the Diabetes Outpatient Education Program. “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a patient progress along the health continuum. It is then that you begin to understand the meaning of extraordinary care.”
