COM resident of the month

Name:  Jennifer Dwyer, M.D.

Medical school you attended/year you graduated: UNMC/2014

Residency/fellowship at UNMC:  Urologic Surgery

Program director: Chad LaGrange, M.D.

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC:

Five years, I am in my fourth year.

What do you like the most about your training program:

We get early operative experience and have a high case volume. We have a very collegial culture. My fellow residents are a wonderful group of people and our attendings are fantastic to work with.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:

The aging population, uncertainty about accessible health care coverage, training enough medical students to cover the anticipated shortage of physicians. But, it’s also an exciting time. We have collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches that allow us to work with lots of providers. As a urology resident, we get to train with surgical technology that is innovative and cutting edge. The landscape of medicine is always evolving and being a part of it is a true privilege.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

My son is without question my greatest accomplishment. The work-life balance has been a challenge at times, but I’m really proud of how my husband, family and I have navigated the past four years.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

I am a certified scuba diver.

I love 1980s rock.

My three siblings are all in medicine – an OB/GYN, a nursing student and a medical student.
