Wellness fair marks Women’s Health Week

The Olson Center for Women’s Health will mark National Woman’s Health Week today with a wellness fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham Outpatient Center’s West Atrium.

The fair will offer information on:

blood pressure;
cancer care;
exercise;
eye care;
gardening;
nutrition;
organ donation;
skin longevity;
tobacco cessation;
weight loss; and
other women’s health issues.

In addition, the fair will feature:

a cooking demonstration;
a book fair;
a life coach;
massage;
spa;
meditation services; and
wholesale products.

Dr. Fayad to speak
at Olson luncheon

"Preventing and Treating Stroke in Women: Why, When, and How?" will be the topic of the May Olson Center Brown Bag Luncheon, presented as part of National Women's Health Week.

Pierre Fayad, M.D., professor of neurological sciences at UNMC and medical director of the Nebraska Stroke Center at UNMC's clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, will speak at the event, from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.

Dr. Fayad will discuss the key symptoms of stroke and how it presents in women in particular, as well as strategies for managing and treating acute stroke.

According to the CDC, stroke kills approximately 140,000 Americans every year -- that is one out of every 20 deaths. Every 40 seconds, someone in the US is having a stroke and every 4 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies from stroke. If someone survives a stroke, many times they must deal with a serious long-term disability. And women are equally at risk of stroke.

Seating is limited. Please pre-register by calling the Olson Center at 402-559-6345. Bring lunch and simple refreshments will be provided.

The lectures are free, but there is a $10 fee to obtain nursing credit. Payment instructions will be given at pre-registration.

Note: The UNMC College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education is accredited with distinction as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity is provided for 1.0 contact hour under ANCC criteria, with course ID 18OL008.
