Dr. Sigler retires after illustrious career in academic dentistry

Dr. Ernest W. Sigler retired from the College of Dentistry on June 30, 2020. It is hard to imagine the college without Dr. Sigler as he has been such an integral part of the Department of Adult Restorative Dentistry.

Dr. Sigler has had a long and illustrious career in academic dentistry. He was with the College of Dentistry for 15 years, most recently serving as an associate group leader for junior and senior dental students and teaching 'Assessment and Treatment Planning' and 'Patient Centered Comprehensive Care.' 

Dr. Sigler has been a Husker since 1965 when he earned a scholarship to play quarterback for the Huskers. He received his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in 1975 and completed postgraduate training in Advanced Education in General Dentistry in Fort Hood, Texas. 

Dr. Sigler's dedicated military career has resulted in numerous awards such as the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Expert Field Badge, Order of Military Medical Merit, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon and the Legion of Merit. 

In addition, Dr. Sigler has received several honors and awards in dentistry, including the Dr. T.H. Williams Memorial Award, Mentor of the Year, Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award, the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry Alumni Associate Outstanding Educator Award, the Dr. Kenneth Batenhorst Memorial Faculty 4-Year Teaching Award twice and numerous faculty recognition awards from multiple classes. 

Dr. Sigler is well known nationally for his academic achievements and leadership. He was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the International College of Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and is a fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Sigler is a very talented educator who has been a mentor and inspiration to numerous faculty, students and alumni. His passion and strong commitment to teaching future dentists inspires everyone around him. Most importantly, Dr. Sigler truly cares about people. 

The faculty, staff, students and alumni of the College of Dentistry express our sincere gratitude for all that he has done and his commitment and devotion to our family. He will be greatly missed!
