Tyler Martin, MD, chair and CEO of Adjuvance Technologies, told a Dec. 16 winter Graduate Studies Honors Convocation crowd that a graduate degree from UNMC “is your ticket to get to the table.”

But, “It is not your ticket to stay at the table.”

UNMC alumnus Tyler Martin, MD, gave the keynote address.

Dr. Martin, a UNMC alumnus, who has led teams that filed more than 100 Investigational New Drug (IND) Applications, including two adjuvanted vaccines approved by major regulatory authorities, served as keynote speaker. The event honored more than 20 MS degree candidates and more than 40 PhD degree candidates, who would officially receive those degrees at commencement the following day.

Convocation traditionally includes the hooding of degree candidates by mentors and the presentation of UNMC Graduate Studies major awards.

Dr. Martin touched on the theme that expertise in science is just the beginning: “You need interpersonal skills to be successful,” he said, continuing along a handful of points:

  • Be excellent. There is always more to learn and more to discover.
  • Respect colleagues. People will remember how they were treated well, and also how they were not treated well.
  • Be thankful. You have worked hard, but you also are the recipient of many blessings you did not create.
  • Be confident. You are going to have a myriad of opportunities.

“Early in my career I felt a bit timid,” Dr. Martin said. “What I found is I had outstanding training. UNMC punches above its weight.”
