Events set for Native American Heritage Month

The NE-HEALING program in the UNMC College of Public Health, in partnership with Nebraska Medicine, will host several events for Native American Heritage Month.

  • Nov. 1: Sicangu Lakota artist Steve Tamayo will present “Ribbon Skirt: The Story of Adaption and Survival, A Symbol of Womanhood” from noon-1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center. 
  • Nov. 13: A ribbon skirt workshop will be held at Bluebird Cultural Initiative, hosted by Tamayo, its founder, and Executive Director Nicole Benegas. The workshop is limited to 12 participants. Interested parties can email the NE-HEALING program.
  • Nov. 29: Native author Denise Lajimodiere, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, will discuss her book, “Stinging Rosaries: The History, the Unforgiveable, and the Healing of Northern Plains American Indian Boarding School Survivors,” from noon to 1 p.m. in the Michael Sorrell Center room 4053.
