Carlos Del Río, MD, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and interim dean of the Emory School of Medicine and Grady Health System, will be a guest in Omaha and speaker on Sept. 22 to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

The UNMC Department of Internal Medicine and Division of Infectious Diseases, the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) Nebraska Chapter and NHMA National are sponsoring these events with Dr. Del Río:

  • Breakfast meeting with Dr. Del Río at the Kimpton Cottonwood Hotel, 7:30-9 a.m. This event is for members from the UNMC Latino Medical Student Association, NHMA Nebraska and Urban Health Opportunities Program pre-medical students.
  • Trivia Vaccine Clinic from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Mexican Consulate. The event is open to the public. NHMA Nebraska, in partnership with OneWorld clinic and the Mexican Consulate, will offer COVID-19 vaccines and the opportunity for visitors to engage with health care experts to ask questions or clarify concerns regarding vaccinations. An educational trivia event regarding COVID-19 prevention will offer prizes to participants from the community. In addition, people who receive a vaccine on the day of the event will receive a $20 gift card. This COVID-19 vaccine clinic is a continuation of the “Cultural Vaccine Clinics” that members of the NHMA Nebraska Chapter have helped lead during the pandemic, including the “Soccer Vaccine Clinic” and the “Mariachi Vaccine Clinic.”
  • Internal medicine grand rounds with Dr. Del Río on “The Health Care Needs of Migrants” at the UNMC Durham Research Center 1 auditorium from noon-1 p.m. The event is open to the public. It will be followed by a coffee reception and meet and greet with Dr. Del Río from 1-1:30 p.m.

Other Hispanic Heritage Month events around campus and the community include:

  • Guest speaker Athena Ramos, PhD, of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities and an associate professor in the Department of Health Promotion at the UNMC College of Public Health. This event is sponsored by the UNMC Office of Inclusion. Dr. Ramos will speak on Sept. 18 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Sorrell Center, room 3030. Register online through Engage.
  • The Fiestas Patrias Health Fair community health fair will be Saturday, Sept. 16, from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. along South 24th Street.
  • The Munroe-Meyer Institute will hold Zumba Fiesta with Raquel Cruz on Friday, Oct. 6, from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the MMI Gym, first floor.
  • UNMC faculty, staff and student discounts are available to El Museo Latino from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. Admission is $4 for staff and faculty, $3 for students.
