Great Plains Leadership Institute kicks off 18th cohort

This September, the Great Plains Leadership Institute offered by the UNMC College of Public Health kicked off its 18th cohort in Nebraska City at the Arbor Day Farm’s Lied Lodge.

The institute is an immersive, year-long experience designed for emerging, mid-level and senior leaders from the Great Plains region and beyond, who play essential roles in keeping communities healthy. This year, the institute has 27 scholars from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota and Minnesota.

Scholars come from organizations that include governmental public health, medical institutions, community health centers, academic institutions, community-based organizations and the business community.

Clinicians, staff and faculty interested in investing in their leadership skills are encouraged to apply.

The robust experiential curriculum includes on-site and distance-based learning, mentoring and coaching, and collaborative practice projects. The curriculum is separated into eight distinct competencies that are covered throughout the year:

  • Owning your leadership identity;
  • Valuing culture and differences;
  • Developing others;
  • Leading positive change;
  • Influencing organizational culture;
  • Creating effective partnerships;
  • Building political savvy; and
  • Interpreting complex systems.

Scholars learn from experts in the field, including Great Plains Leadership Institute faculty, guest speakers, peer mentors and professional mentors.

Each year, applications for the institute open in early spring and close in June. To learn more or get on the list for next year’s application cycle, visit the Great Plains Leadership Institute website or contact Director Brandon Drozd by email or by phone at 402-559-3564.
