Mimi Hamling, MD, is the UNMC College of Medicine Resident of the Month.

  • Name: Mimi Hamling, MD
  • Medical school/year graduated: Ross University School of Medicine, class of 2019
  • Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Diagnostic radiology

Program director:

 Neil Hansen, MD

How long is your training program, and how long have you been at UNMC?

The diagnostic radiology residency is four years. I did my preliminary (PGY-1) year at Mizzou in general surgery.

What do you like the most about your training program?

Resident camaraderie – being able to come into work every day and enjoy who I’m working and spending time with goes a very long way for success in a residency program.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?

At least in radiology, there have been many changes to the format of our qualifying and certifying board examinations, with the qualifying exam now being written only and the certifying exam now being oral starting with the class of 2027. It puts a lot of pressure on residency programs to figure out how to adapt to those exams and how to prepare residents when they are not sure initially how these exams will play out.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • Couples-matching with my husband, Quint Soto, MD, into our top program (IM) and becoming chief resident of my program.
  • Persevering through the troubles of a discontinued fellowship program and joining a better program for my future employment.
  • Finding a job position that had essentially everything I was looking for in a career in MSK radiology.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • We have two Great Danes, both weighing about 130 pounds.
  • I teach fitness classes out west in the weekday evenings and Saturday mornings (call permitting).
  • In third grade, I was one of the kid robots in the original “Spy Kids” movie (with Antonio Banderas).
