Northern Division celebrates 15 years

Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, UNMC College of Nursing dean, speaks with attendees at the Norfolk Division's 15th anniversary celebration.

On Friday, Aug. 22, more than 70 faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members gathered in Norfolk to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the UNMC College of Nursing – Northern Division.

The event marked a meaningful milestone for the division, which was unable to commemorate its 10th anniversary five years ago.

“We knew we wanted to come together this year to mark this milestone,” said Kat Hamilton, associate director of the UNMC Alumni Relations Office, who helped the division organize the event. “The founding of the Northern Division was made possible by the vision and dedication of many individuals. Today, with more than 400 alumni making a difference in their communities, we see the lasting impact of that vision.”

The Northern Division was first proposed in 2006 by then-state senator Mike Flood, with the goal of increasing the number of nurses in northeast Nebraska. Since its opening in 2010, the division has grown significantly and continues to serve as a vital resource for the region’s healthcare workforce.

Attendees enjoyed food, live music by Omaha native Aaron Bressman, and lawn games while reconnecting and celebrating the division’s achievements. The event also underscored UNMC’s enduring commitment to rural health care and nursing education.
