Two continuing education classes set for fall

Two continuing education classes are scheduled for October and November.

On Oct. 31, Amy Killeen, DDS, the BJ and Ann Moran Professor of Periodontology at the UNMC College of Dentistry, will speak on “The Association of Oral Inflammatory Disease and Mental Health Disorders.”

The class will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the college building in Lincoln, 4000 East Campus Loop South.

The association of oral inflammatory conditions, specifically periodontal disease, and mental health disorders, is a rapidly growing area of interest for health care professionals involved in dentistry and medicine. This lecture will discuss the role of oral inflammation in the development of mental health disorders as well as the potential role of periodontal disease in depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. 

At the conclusion of this accredited continuing education activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the current understanding of periodontal disease etiology 
  • Compare the etiologies of periodontal disease and mental health disorders
  • Define the relationship between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Identify shared risk factors between periodontal disease and mental health disorders
  • Determine treatment strategies for patients with mental health disorders and oral inflammatory disease
  • Develop better strategies for co-treating patients with mental health disorders with medical colleagues
  • Examine how oral inflammation can exacerbate conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depression
  • Recognize commonalities between oral inflammatory disease and systemic conditions such as diabetes, RA and obesity.

On Nov. 7, UNMC College of Dentistry Dean Gerry Kugel, DMD, PhD, and Chad Anderson, DDS, of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, will discuss “The Do’s and Don’ts of Porcelain Laminate Veneers.”

The class will begin with at 8 a.m. registration and include a lecture from 8:30 a.m. to noon, as well as an optional hands-on workshop from 1-4 p.m. It will be held at the college building in Lincoln.

The lecture will cover:

  • An overview of the treatment planning and case selection for veneers
  • Preparation and cementation tips
  • Discussion of pitfalls to avoid, including the most common problems associated with porcelain veneer cases and ways of avoiding these mistakes.

The workshop will include:

  • A step-by-step review of preparation, temporization and cementation processes
  • A veneer preparation reduction guide
  • Attendees will prepare and temporize multiple teeth, as well as learn to create a reduction guide and temporary shell.

Cost: Lecture only $169; lecture and workshop, $399; auxiliaries lecture only, $49.

UNMC College of Dentistry students can attend the lecture at no charge.
