Longtime group announces new name: UNMC Faculty Club

Ann Berger, PhD

A campus group that has evolved throughout a history that traces to 1920 is again undergoing a change with a new name: The UNMC Faculty Club.

Over the last 105 years, the club has remained steadfast in its mission of scholarship, service and social interaction, said Ann Berger, PhD, the group’s president for 2025-26 and a retired faculty member in the UNMC College of Nursing.

In that time, the name has changed several times to reflect the evolving demographics of the university and its faculty. Past names included the Doctor’s Wives Club and the UNMC Faculty Wives Club. Most recently, it was known as the UNMC Faculty Women’s Club.

To reflect the growing campus and its faculty, the members of the UNMC Faculty Women’s Club established the new UNMC Faculty Club name, which took effect in September. Eligible members include all UNMC faculty, executive administrators and their spouses or partners, Dr. Berger said.

“We are proud to announce the UNMC Faculty Club as our new name,” Dr. Berger said. “The name has changed but not the focus. The faculty club continues to promote social engagement at UNMC through events, luncheons with speakers and special interest groups.”

The faculty club will offer service opportunities, she said, and members will raise funds to support scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students across UNMC programs.

In 1920, a group of women came together to support the activities of what was then known as the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. Dr. Berger said the founding members were primarily spouses of medical educators on campus, including names well known in UNMC history, such as Poynter, Holyoke and Conkling.

Dr. Berger said the club’s goal this year is to honor its past 105 years while embracing the future. Her focus as president will be on renewal and innovation.

The UNMC Faculty Club’s mission statement concludes with the words: “To work zealously for the advancement of the Medical Center.”

“This continues to guide us today,” Dr. Berger said. “UNMC needs the faculty club, and the faculty club needs UNMC — now and in the years ahead.”
