A new opportunity to honor Dr. King’s legacy

Martin Luther King Jr.

This year, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine are celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a new and meaningful way — by rolling up our sleeves and serving the community together.

Instead of the traditional luncheon, colleagues from Nebraska Medicine and UNMC are invited to participate in an MLK Day of Service, partnering with United Way of the Midlands’ Good on the Go program. The volunteer event is Monday, Jan. 19, at the Truhlsen Campus Events Center.

Dr. King called on everyone to advance justice, compassion and unity through action. This hands-on service opportunity is a powerful way to live out those values, connect with colleagues and make an immediate impact in the community, together.

Volunteers will work in teams to assemble 1,000 mindfulness kits that support community resiliency and will be distributed to local agencies serving individuals in need. The Good on the Go program is designed to:

  • Strengthen teamwork.
  • Foster engagement.
  • Build deeper connections with the community.

The event also will highlight moments from Dr. King’s life and legacy to provide inspiration during the day of service. After assembling kits, colleagues are welcome to stay, connect with others and reflect, or come and go as their schedules allow. The space is designed to encourage community, conversation and shared purpose.

A total of 64 volunteer spots are available, a number chosen in honor of 1964, the year Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the landmark Civil Rights Act was signed into law, the most sweeping civil rights legislation since Reconstruction.

Sign up to reserve a volunteer spot. Box lunch will be provided.
