International College of Surgeons section to meet in Omaha

Omaha will host the International College of Surgeons-U.S. Section meeting this month.

The ICS, headquartered in Chicago, was founded in Geneva, Switzerland, by Max Thorek, MD, in 1935. The organization has nearly 60 sections throughout the world with several thousand members, and its aim is to foster collaboration between surgeons throughout the world. 

Joshua Mammen, MD, PhD, president of the U.S. section of the ICS, physician-in-chief with the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Merle M. Musselman Centennial Professor of Surgery and chief of the UNMC Division of Surgical Oncology, will host the event. It will be held at the Marriott in downtown Omaha from March 9-11.

Dr. Mammen will invite attendees on a tour of the National Cancer Institute-designated Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center during the week.

“The International College of Surgeons is committed to unifying surgeons and related specialists throughout the world to promote surgical excellence for the benefit of all people,” Dr. Mammen said. “I am honored to host the meeting this year of the U.S. Section in my hometown of Omaha.”

In addition to speakers from across the country, international speakers at the event will include:

  • Nicolas Zucchini, MD, of the University of Trieste and Cattinara Hospital in Trieste, Italy, who will discuss “Surgical Simulation at the TROGSS ITP: Synthetic Models vs. Biologic Tissue – Critical Appraisal of Available Tools.”
  • Michail Koutentakis, MD, of the Medical University of Warsaw, Poland, who will speak on “The CARS 3.0, CALS, and CAES Curricula: The Future of Simulation with AI and Human Judgment.”

Prominent invited lectures from the United States include:

  • Patricia Numann, MD, past president of the American College of Surgeons
    who will speak on “Putting Your Best Foot Forward.”
  • Waddah Al-Refaie, MD, chair of surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine speaking on “Improving Rural and International Care.”
  • Benedict Nwomeh, MD, director of the Global Surgery Program at The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center who will speak on “Rethinking Surgical Certification: the ABS Non-Traditional Pathway and the Future of Surgical Training.”

Additionally, Thavam Thambi-Pillai, MD, president of the international organization and a professor of surgery at the University of South Dakota, will attend the event. Dr. Thambi-Pillai is the first surgeon from the United States to lead the college in several decades.
