Resident spotlight: Andrew Rappolt

Andrew Rappolt is a resident physician at the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.

Name: Andrew Rappolt

Hometown: San Diego, California

How I became interested in medicine: I’ve been interested in pursuing medicine from a young age. I was initially drawn to the field for the ability to explore physiology that underlies human well-being. Also, through exploring medicine, I have loved the opportunities for philanthropy and meaningful human connection.

Education:

  • Medical School: UNMC College of Medicine

Research interests: Education, Interprofessional Simulation

Medical interests: Pediatrics

Professional Memberships:

  • American Society of Anesthesiologists
  • Nebraska Society of Anesthesiologists
  • Society for Pediatric Anesthesia
  • American Medical Association

How I fell in love with anesthesiology: I enjoy anesthesia because it allows me to build meaningful, often immediate connections with patients while advocating for them during some of their most vulnerable moments in the operating room. I’m also drawn to the hands-on nature of the field.  The ability to recognize a problem, intervene directly, and see the results in real time I think is pretty cool.

Why UNMC? UNMC has been a fantastic place to learn and train as a medical student and I look forward to continuing my growth as a physician through residency here. The program has great variety in the cases it provides trainees and the preparation for fellowship and beyond is what I was looking for when I picked a residency program. My family has also built a great life here in Omaha and we are excited to not have to move.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I have 2 dogs (Milo and Mabel) that keep my wife and I very busy, both Australian Shepards.
  • I enjoy most sports, but my favorite is soccer. I mainly follow the German league and support Borussia Dortmund.
  • My wife and I love to travel when we can and are hoping to go to every continent (Antarctica might take some convincing!), we are planning on going to Hawaii before residency starts.
