UNMC’s Roslyn Mannon, MD, professor of internal medicine, has received the Excellence in Kidney Transplantation Award from the National Kidney Foundation, a major award in the transplant and nephrology community that recognizes Dr. Mannon’s achievements throughout the course of her career.

“This award comes as a complete surprise,” said Dr. Mannon, who received the award at a May 6 event in New Orleans, Louisiana. “To be recognized for my achievements in the field of kidney transplantation by peers and other non-transplant colleagues affirms my passion to continue to advance the field of transplantation and to improve access and outcomes to our patients with kidney diseases.”

The Excellence in Kidney Transplantation Award recognizes scientists or clinician scientists whose exceptional research has contributed novel insights to improved treatments, access and clinical care in kidney transplantation.

Foundation leaders said Dr. Mannon’s work throughout her career has transformed kidney transplantation, from advancing clinical research to advocating for patients and shaping the future of allograft care.

“Dr. Mannon is a trailblazer in the field of transplant nephrology. Her career exemplifies the compassion and innovation that define the mission of the NKF,” said Kirk Campbell, MD, president of the National Kidney Foundation. “Through her work, she has helped move the field of kidney transplantation forward, bringing hope to countless patients and families.”

Tod Ibrahim, CEO and executive vice president of American Society of Nephrology, offered perspective, praising Dr. Mannon’s “commitment to improving the lives of people living with kidney diseases” and her place at the forefront of advances in kidney care.

He said her commitment to advancing patient care and improving kidney transplantation has made a profound impact, not only on her patients, but on the broader transplant and nephrology communities.

Dr. Mannon is a past president of the American Society of Transplantation,a deputy editor of the American Journal of Transplantation, and past chair of public policy and advocacy for the American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Mannon, whose UNMC roles include vice chair for research for the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine and associate chief of research in the UNMC Division of Nephrology, has a lengthy history of advocacy for transplant recipients and was instrumental in the development of the Transplant Therapeutic Consortium, a private-public partnership with the FDA to develop new clinical trial endpoints to invigorate the transplant therapeutic pipeline.

“Dr. Mannon is a national leader in her field and this award reflects that,” said Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. “Her colleagues in the college are well aware of her passion and commitment, and we congratulate her on this recognition.”
