Message from the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine

Hemant Roy, MD

As the academic year winds down, this is an excellent time to celebrate the achievements of the department of internal medicine in all aspects of our mission.

The department continues to exemplify excellence in patient care. Efforts that have recently received national recognition include the work of the division of infectious diseases and Dr. Angela Hewlett, as medical director of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, in caring for the cruise ship passengers. In addition, Dr. Marvin Eng in the division of cardiovascular medicine has been featured in the media for cutting-edge procedures that offer life-changing, minimally invasive solutions for our patients. Also, the division of rheumatology and immunology and Dr. Tina Mahajan recently took the initiative to start offering rheumatology services at UNMC’s student-run and community-focused SHARING Clinic.

Congratulations to Drs. Roz Mannon, Jasmine Marcelin, Jennifer Davis, Chris Smith, Moataz Ellithi and Anupam Kotwal, who were recently recognized by our institution or national organizations for their expertise and excellence. We also recently celebrated research within our department at Grand Rounds on June 12. Congratulations to our faculty, researchers and staff who were honored! And, well done to the internal medicine trainees who showcased their research at the GME Research Symposium. Eight of our residents and fellows received awards for their oral or poster presentations.

We also celebrate our graduating students, residents and fellows who are moving on to the next steps in their careers. Our residency program recently held its end-of-year banquet and recognized the achievements of our trainees and educators. In a few weeks, we will welcome a new class of residents and fellows from an outstanding Match!

There are many career accomplishments among our faculty to celebrate, including those who recently achieved promotion or tenure. Other examples include Dr. Chelsea Navarrette, who will become assistant dean for admissions in the UNMC College of Medicine beginning next month. Dr. Cory Rohlfson was named a National Academy of Medicine scholar, and Dr. Jasmine Marcelin was selected as an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program fellow. Several faculty members and trainees were also inducted into AOA.

Nominations are still being accepted for two UNMC Department of Internal Medicine awards. There are just a few weeks remaining to recognize a colleague for their exceptional work in clinical and educational mentoring, advocacy or other meaningful contributions to our mission.

I thank all in our department for their contributions. You make a difference!
