Setting up for a confident, successful return to school

Tara Fahmie, PhD, director of MMI's Department of Specialized Behavior Intervention

Going back to school can be exciting, but it also can be a difficult transition. Children may experience worry and frustration, may protest, have difficulty following directions or exhibit more intense behavior. Fortunately, families can take several steps to help.

First, begin adjusting your child’s sleep and wake schedule before school starts. Sleep affects behavior, emotions, learning and health. If school requires an earlier bedtime or wake-up time, shift the schedule by 15 to 30 minutes every few days. Practicing the morning routine, including getting dressed, eating breakfast and leaving the house, also may help.

Second, help your child understand what to expect. You might talk about school, create a visual schedule, read a social story or share pictures or videos of the school that you find online. If possible, visit the building, meet the teacher or practice the route.

Third, rehearse potentially difficult routines, such as separating from family, entering school, leaving a favorite item at home, turning off a device, beginning work, waiting, following rules or requesting a break. Practice briefly when your child is calm, provide help and praise their efforts. Practicing in a comfortable environment, such as at home, is likely easier for your child than refreshing these skills in a new environment, like school.

Finally, create a one-page “Get to Know Me” document for every school professional working with your child. Include your child’s strengths, interests, communication style, signs of feeling overwhelmed, as well as helpful supports. Brief, practical information can help teachers create an environment responsive to your child’s interests and needs.

Even small steps can support a confident and successful return to school. So, choose the strategies that feel manageable for your family. Wishing you and your children a happy 2026-27 school year!
