Representatives from the Higher Learning Commission will visit the University of Nebraska Lincoln and UNMC campuses Oct. 5-7.
The visit will follow up on the joint accreditation of UNL and UNMC approved earlier this year while also fulfilling the 10-year accreditation review for each.
During the three-day visit, HLC representatives will tour portions of both campuses and hold meetings with faculty and staff. Discussions will focus on an array of topics, including experiential learning, statewide partnerships and engagement, and stewardship of university resources.
Faculty and staff from both UNMC and UNL are invited to participate in three open sessions with HLC representatives on Monday, Oct. 5, at the Nebraska East Union on UNL’s East Campus. Sessions will focus on criteria established by the HLC:
- 11:10-11:50 a.m. — Mission and governance
- 3:30-4:15 p.m. — Educational programs
- 4:15-5 p.m. — Financial resources and planning
Members of both UNL and UNMC communities are encouraged to attend the session or sessions most relevant to their work and experiences.
In June 2026, UNL and UNMC received formal federal recognition of their singular accreditation as the University of Nebraska from the U.S. Department of Education and the Higher Learning Commission.
The new accreditation status allows the university to report measures such as enrollment, degrees awarded, faculty honors and research expenditures together. The structure provides a more complete picture of the scale and impact of the two institutions. Combined research expenditures, for example, would place the unified institution 55th nationally, compared with UNL and UNMC individually ranking 87th and 131st, respectively.
The singular accreditation also re-establishes a model previously used by the two campuses from 1913 to 1968. UNL and UNMC will now benefit from an accreditation structure that more closely aligns with peer institutions and reflects the breadth of their collective teaching, research and engagement.
