Tammy Kielian, PhD, a professor in UNMC’s Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, recently was elected to serve as a councilor for the Society of Leukocyte Biology.

“It was an honor to have been selected,” said Dr. Kielian, who is the Choudari Kommineni, DVM, PhD, Endowed Professor of Pathology. Her research interests span the fields of immunology, infectious diseases and neuroscience. Her laboratory has a long-standing interest in studying the pathogenesis and immune responses elicited by Staphylococcus aureus biofilm using mouse models of prosthetic joint and craniotomy infection.

Dr. Kielian was elected to a four-year term, which begins Jan. 1, by a vote of current society members. A councilor helps guide the operations and direction of the society, an inclusive global community of scientists in leukocyte research and related disciplines. Councilors are also ambassadors for the society, spreading the word about the benefits of membership, award opportunities, and helping recruit new members, especially trainees.

“In my councilor role, I have also been asked to serve as a council liaison for the SLB professional development committee, which plans activities and proposes programs that enhance professional growth for its members, with a special emphasis on early-career investigators,” she said.
