Chancellor to address budget cuts at forums

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will host two forums next week for faculty, employees and students, detailing how UNMC will address the remaining budget cuts, totaling $2 million, for the upcoming fiscal year.

The forums will begin at 3 p.m. Monday, June 9, and at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10. Both forums will take place at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater, with the fourth-floor University Hospital Amphitheater serving as an overflow room.

On Saturday, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents will approve the university’s biennial budget. If the regents approve a budget that has been proposed, UNMC will take a $4 million cut for fiscal year 2003-2004.

On March 10, Chancellor Maurer announced that state support amounting to $2 million would be reduced in two areas – academic support services and faculty support. Academic support services includes those programs, other than faculty salaries, that support academic programs.

The cuts were necessitated after state revenues fell below projections. To deal with the shortfall, the university’s appropriation was cut by 4.7 percent for the upcoming, 2003-2005 biennium.
