Dr. Wengel named interim chairman of psychiatry

picture disc.Steven Wengel, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry, has been named interim chairman of psychiatry, effective April 1.

He succeeds David Folks, M.D., who is retiring March 31. Dr. Folks will serve as a faculty member until June 1.

Dr. Wengel is an Omaha native and a graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine. He did his psychiatry residency and geriatric psychiatry fellowship in the Creighton-Nebraska combined residency program and joined the UNMC faculty in 1991.

Dr. Wengel currently serves as director of medical student education in psychiatry, and also is a member of the College of Medicine’s Admissions Committee.

His clinical and research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of dementia, mood disorders and other psychiatric problems affecting older adults, as well as the psychiatric complications of Parkinson’s disease and the pathophysiology and management of delirium.

Dr. Wengel is married to Cynthia Wengel, M.D., also a UNMC College of Medicine graduate. She is the past director of the division of general pediatrics at Creighton University. The couple has an 8-year-old son, Kyle.
