College of Pharmacy honors preceptors

The College of Pharmacy honored its annual Preceptors of the Year and added a new award, Preceptor Site of the Year, at its recent annual scholastic honors convocation.

College of Pharmacy alums Staci Hubert, Pharm.D., and Joy Beranek, Pharm.D., were named 2015 Preceptors of the Year. Fourth-year students lauded the Ashland Pharmacy pharmacists for a rotation which included hands-on experience with patients, including providing cognitive services and blood-pressure readings. Students who took the Ashland rotation also got the unique experience of working in both retail and compounding pharmacy.

Drs. Hubert and Beranek modeled continuity of care, putting their patients first and a love of their chosen profession.

The Preceptor Site of the Year award honors not just the pharmacists the students work with, but the overall interdisciplinary interaction with the other professionals and staff on site. Multidisciplinary rounds, shadowing and daily interaction with other health care professionals were part of what made the Grand Island Veterans Affairs Ambulatory Care rotation the award’s inaugural winner.

The Grand Island VA integrated students into its workflow in a number of ways, offering an anticoagulation clinic, multiple medication therapy management clinics and a mental health clinic. Additionally, it was a great model of a collaborative practice between physicians and pharmacists.

Lourdes Heuermann, Pharm.D., Lisa Bilslend, Pharm.D., Brent Bollwitt, Pharm.D., and Paula Carlson, Pharm.D., were recognized by UNMC pharmacy students for their mentorship roles at the Grand Island VA site. All but Dr. Bollwitt are UNMC alums.
