State Sen. Nicole Fox visits UNMC

State Sen. Nicole Fox, who represents District 7, visited UNMC last week to meet with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D.

Fox spoke with Dr. Gold about the university’s educational programs and the initiatives the university offers to address health disparities throughout the state.

“I wanted to learn what programs the university is involved in as far as educational opportunities for students as well as UNMC’s efforts with outcomes data collection or programming,” Fox said.

One of her concerns as a legislator, she said, is increasing access to health care for the underserved, whether in Omaha or in rural areas of the state. Fox said she left her meeting with Dr. Gold pleased with UNMC’s efforts in this area, particularly with the wide variety of activities designed to recruit students in underserved areas to become interested in health care education and health care-related job opportunities.

She also was pleased to see UNMC’s financial impact on the city and state, particularly in terms of research dollars.

“UNMC is well-known for its research,” she said, “UNMC’s research is generating revenue, and those research dollars are leading to job creation throughout the state.”

Fox said she was looking forward to partnering with UNMC to facilitate continued growth in both of these areas.

The visit to UNMC was hardly the first for Fox, a medical nutrition therapist at Nebraska Medicine. Fox, who also is a preceptor for UNMC students as well as an adjunct instructor, said the meeting with Dr. Gold left her “very proud” of the high-quality programs at UNMC.
