UNMC to host regional redox symposium

For the first time, UNMC will host this summer’s Society for Redox Biology and Medicine (SfRBM) Regional Redox Symposium/Larry W. and Terry D. Oberley Symposium. Short for oxidation reduction reaction, redox involves a chemical reaction in which the oxidation states of atoms are changed.

Larry W. and Terry D. Oberley were pioneering researchers in the redox field. Larry Oberley was the father and Terry Oberley was the uncle of UNMC’s Rebecca Oberley-Deegan, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology.

Nearly 150 people are expected to attend the June 8-9 event in the Sorrell Center.

Registration is open for the two-day symposium titled “Redox Mechanisms in Cell Proliferation, Differentiation, and Death,” which will discuss the rapidly evolving landscape in redox signaling paradigms and the role of the redox environment in contributing to the cell fate in many different diseases processes. Sessions will be dedicated to inflammation, cancer, and aging and free radicals.

“The symposium will showcase research in redox biology throughout the country and will be a great opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to present their work,” said Dr. Oberley-Deegan, who also serves as one of three symposium chairs.
