UNMC student named Yale Ciencia Academy fellow

Maranda Thompson, an M.D./Ph.D. at UNMC, was among 40 young science leaders from 29 institutions nationwide selected as fellows of the Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) for Career Development.

The YCA provides doctoral students from underrepresented backgrounds in the life and health sciences with opportunities for mentoring, networking, skills development, and contributing to their communities through science outreach.

The program is led by the non-profit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) in collaboration with Yale University. Fellows must apply to be selected to participate in the year-long, mostly virtual program which leverages the CienciaPR community — one of the largest networks of Hispanic/Latinx scientists in the world.

“I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity to grow as a student, professional and advocate in my community,” Thompson said. “This program offers a diverse network of scientists that I am excited to take part in.”

Thompson, a first-generation college student, is passionate about helping vulnerable populations. One of her long-term career goals is to combine her passions for research and vulnerable communities. She wants to become a pediatrician conducting translational research focused on the placenta’s role in maternal-infant morbidity and mortality.

River City Mixed Chorus offers discounted performance

The River City Mixed Chorus (RCMC) is offering a discount to members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community for its presentation of “A Pop of Color” on March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Joslyn Museum’s Witherspoon Auditorium. In partnership with the Joslyn, this concert features a unique celebration of the arts, as songs from the musical theater and pop genres that celebrate art and color, and tell stories through visualization and landscapes, are paired with visual works of art. In addition to artwork from Joslyn’s permanent collection, “A Pop of Color” will incorporate self-portraits from local LGBTQ+ youth.

Attendees are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. to visit the Joslyn’s galleries and see art featured in the performance. Docents will be on hand to answer questions, and a cash bar will be available. The discount code UNMCNM5OFF offers UNMC & Nebraska Medicine employees $5 off the online purchase of $20-$30 seats, with no limit on the number of times it can be used. “Enter promo code” is at the top of the seat selection page.
