Medical technology division is renamed, reaccredited

The UNMC School of Allied Health Professions’ Division of Medical Technology has been renamed the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) Program.

The name change brings SAHP in line with the national trend to provide a more descriptive program name for potential students and graduates, said Linda Fell, associate director of the CLS Program.

“Although both names have been interchangeable for years, the reference to medical technology actually goes back to the 1920s,” Fell said. “We encounter people who think med tech involves machinery. The new name is more descriptive of what we actually do.”

In addition, the CLS Program, as of Oct. 31, received a continuing seven-year accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. This is the maximum number of years awarded for accreditation. Both UNMC and its consortium partner, Nebraska Methodist Hospital School of Clinical Laboratory Science, received the highly honored seven-year reaccreditation.
