MMI AmeriCorps hosts Child ID Day

picture disc. The UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute’s AmeriCorps recently held its second Child ID Day.

The Jan. 28, citywide event focused on children in North Omaha. In all, 48 children were fingerprinted and photographed using ID kits provided free of charge by the Absolute Power and Communications Company, a subsidiary of Brinks Home Security. The ID kits also allowed children to include a hair DNA sample and a section for their dental records.

“As parents, we should always be looking at ways of protecting our kids,” said Dave Burgess. “The Child ID Day is one way of doing that.”

At 10 feet tall, officer Johnny Justice (aka Omaha Police Officer Officer John Oddo) teamed up with Omaha Police Officer John Martinez for the stranger/danger presentation, which included a brief movie.

MMI/AmeriCorps Spanish interpreter Ann Goering assisted Latino families by helping break down language barriers that might have kept families from participating.

Approximately 70 children attended Child ID Day last fall at MMI.
