Miers receives nursing alumni award

Linda Miers, ’71, center, received the UNMC College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award at the nursing alumni reunion on June 3. Linda Miers of Omaha was recently honored with the UNMC College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award.

This award is given in recognition of an individual’s contributions to the nursing profession, their record of achievements, consistent creative nursing practices, contribution to nursing literature and their commitment to the betterment of the UNMC College of Nursing and the nursing profession.

Dr. Miers graduated from the UNMC College of Nursing with a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing in 1971. She went on to earn a masters of science degree in nursing and a doctorate of science in nursing, both from the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).

After her graduation from UNMC, she worked at the University of Nebraska Hospital (now known as The Nebraska Medical Center) until 1978, before accepting a position at the University of Alabama Hospitals and the UAB School of Nursing. After living in Alabama for 27 years, Dr. Miers recently returned to Nebraska to accept a position on the faculty at Creighton University School of Nursing. While in Alabama, she held a number of positions at the University of Alabama Hospitals and the UAB School of Nursing, ultimately retiring as the coordinator of adult acute and continuing care.

As a faculty member at UAB, Dr. Miers received several teaching awards, including both the prestigious President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for the School of Nursing and the Excellence in Teaching Award for the UAB Health System in 2005. Also, in recognition of her outstanding teaching skills, the students in her last class at UAB donated a scholarship in her name.

Throughout her career, Dr. Miers has authored numerous journal articles, chapters and books. She also has maintained a busy schedule as a presenter at national, regional and state conferences. Additionally, she has been a member of several editorial boards for professional nursing journals and has reviewed manuscripts and books. Her scholarly research interests have been in critical and cardiovascular care.

In addition to her teaching, Dr. Miers also was actively involved in serving both the university and her nursing profession. She chaired and was a member of numerous committees at UAB and has been actively involved in several professional nursing organizations.

Dr. Miers is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi and has received several awards and recognition for her nursing skills, including being selected as the Student Nurse of the Year in 1971 by the nursing faculty at the University of Nebraska.

In her new position at Creighton University, Dr. Miers will be revising the cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist program and initiating an acute care nurse practitioner option.
