Auxiliary awards hospital $235,000 — presents Friedlander Scholarships

The University Hospital Auxiliary gave $235,000 to The Nebraska Medical Center during the auxiliary’s annual meeting at the Champions Club of Eagle Run last month.

The money will go toward programs and projects that support and benefit patients and families at The Nebraska Medical Center.

Shelly Rodgers, granddaughter to Alice Friedlander and the chair of the scholarship committee announced the UHA’s annual Alice Friedlander scholarship recipients. The four students awarded the one-year $5000 academic scholarships for 2007 were selected by the University Hospital Auxiliary Alice Friedlander Scholarship Committee. The students were:

Gabrielle Bednar — a physical therapy student who received her bachelor’s from the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK). Now at UNMC, she is ranked seventh in her class. She intends to pursue a career in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy.

Josie McCune — a physical therapy student who received an undergraduate degree in exercise science from UNK. After graduating from physical therapy school, McCune plans to work in geriatrics at a retirement home.

Jeremy Peterson — a UNMC radiography student from Chadron State College, where he completed his undergraduate degree in pre-med studies. Jeremy’s future plans include applying to medical school to become a radiologist in a rural area.

Laura Selig — a nursing student who attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

These scholarships are funded by the University Hospital Auxiliary at The Nebraska Medical Center in honor of Alice Friedlander, who co-founded the auxiliary. Friedlander was director of volunteer services at The Nebraska Medical Center from 1972 to 1990.

In addition to these awards, the UHA recognized past presidents and welcomed the new executive committee officers. The past presidents in attendance included Polly Partsch, Carol Lackner, Adele Hazer, Deb Hinrichs, Gwen Madison (current president), Chris Shaw, Jean Stothert and Lindsay Huurman.
