Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D.

Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D., assistant professor of cellular and integrative physiology, is among the many new faculty members at UNMC.

Name: Matthew Zimmerman, Ph.D.

Title: Assistant professor

Specialty: Free radical biology, neurobiology

Previous position: Postdoctoral trainee, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

Research Interests: Research in Dr. Zimmerman’s laboratory is focused on the role of oxidants and antioxidants in brain cells called neurons in diseases associated with the central nervous system. In particular, the lab studies two different diseases:

  • Hypertension; and
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known at Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Description of duties: Dr. Zimmerman’s primary responsibility is to provide mentorship and guidance to graduate students and postdoctoral research fellows, while developing a strong, extramurally funded research program. As a member of the Redox Biology Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Zimmerman hopes to establish strong collaborations with other scientists interested in free radical biology and medicine. In addition, Dr. Zimmerman will lecture in graduate courses offered by the UNMC Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology.
