Twenty-two students from eight different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)/ Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) program.

Established in 2001, the BRIN program was created to expose students to serious biomedical research, build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions and to strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Today, we meet Sabreena Bathke, one of the new BRIN scholars on campus.

Who is Sabreena Bathke?

I am from a small town in northeast Nebraska. I love to go to the river and go swimming and fishing. I love being around my family.

Has science always been a part of your life?

Yes. I have been watching Discovery Channel with my dad for as long as I can remember. In the sixth grade, I knew I was going to be a scientist.

How is it important to you?

I want to make improvements in peoples’ lives. I love being involved in science and I want a career that will allow me to explore new ideas.

Why did you choose to participate in the BRIN program?

A professor of mine told me about the program and I thought it sounded great.

What do you hope to gain from the program?

I hope to gain knowledge and a better understanding of what science research would be like for a career.
