INBRE Scholars on campus – meet Audra Kennedy

Twenty-six students from 10 different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)/ Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) program.

Established in 2001, the BRIN program was created to expose students to serious biomedical research, build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions and to strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Today we meet Audra Kennedy.

Who is Audra Kennedy?

I live in Kearney and attend (the University of Nebraska at Kearney) as a biology major. I am currently a senior but do not expect to graduate in just a year. I am married, have a 4-year-old, and am expecting in August. Because I am a non-traditional student with a family, I do not carry the heavy load required to graduate in four years. I already have an associate’s degree in science and I am a pre-med student. I would like to be a family physician.

Has science always been a part of your life?

I wanted to be a physician when I was a kid, but when I got into high school I did not like the science and math classes so I changed my mind. However, when I had my daughter, I decided that I’d like to deliver babies. I enjoyed the entire process of being pregnant and labor/delivery. I found it all very interesting. I also enjoy the more advanced sciences that involve more study about the human body.

How is it important to you?

I think it’s important to continue to learn about the human body and how we can relate to and use our environment. It’s interesting to learn about.

Why did you choose to participate in the BRIN program?

I have never been involved in research so I thought the INBRE program would be a good learning experience that would expose me to a new area of science.

What do you hope to gain from the program?

Experience, knowledge and some good memories!
