Facts about the disability population

EDITOR’S NOTE: In recognition of October being Disabilities Awareness Month, UNMC Today will run a series of articles this week related to disabilities awareness.

Some facts about disabilities in the United States:

  • People with disabilities make up the nation’s largest minority as one in five Americans have a disability.
  • The employment rate of working-age people with disabilities is 45.2 percent.
  • The employment rate of working-age people without disabilities is 84 percent.
  • The percentage of working age people without disabilities who work full time is 66 percent.
  • The percentage of working age people with disabilities who work full time is 26.4 percent.
  • The gap between employment rates of working-age people with and without disabilities is 38.8 percent.
